Two Harbors Public Library

The first chess tournament hosted by the library was Saturday, Oct. 6, with Rich Sve as tournament director.

The winners among the youth players were Wyatt Huddleston, first place; Noah Mecklin, second; and Nadia Swoverland, third.

For the adults, a system of tie-breaker points was used to determine first place went to Jennifer Swoverland, second to Gary Sundby and third to Wally Crabtree.

All participants enjoyed some good chess and agreed that it would be fun to do it again next year. Lunch and prizes were provided by the Friends of the Library and Rich Sve.

Players of all ages are welcome to come to Chess Time every month, usually 4-5:30 p.m. on the second Monday. The next date will be Nov. 5 because the library will be closed for the Veterans Day holiday on Nov. 12.

The library also has chess sets and books of chess instruction and strategy available to check out.

Silver Bay Public Library

Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. — Join us as Minnesota author Joel Hare discusses his first fantasy novel, "Pendants of Fate: A Knight's Beginning." This book will be the first installment in a series. Sponsored by the Friends of the Silver Bay Public Library.

The Silver Bay Friends of the Library annual Christmas Tea will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.

Menu courses will include home-baked scones, salad, sandwiches and desserts served with a selection of fine teas. First course will be served at 2:15 p.m. You may bring your favorite tea cup to use and, if you wish, share the cup's story.

Gift basket raffle tickets will be sold during the tea beginning at 1:15 p.m. Winners will be drawn around 3:15 p.m. Live music provided during tea.

Tickets are $10 and available from the Silver Bay Public Library and from Friends of the Silver Bay Public Library. A limited number of tickets will be sold.
