James (Jim) Garfield Alm

Jim Alm, 85, Two Harbors, Minnesota died on June 14th, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital, surrounded by people who loved him.

He was born November 27, 1932 to Garfield H. and Ruth E. (Nelson) Alm in Two Harbors. He was a lifelong resident of Two Harbors, graduating from Two Harbors High School in 1950. He was employed with the DM&IR railroad for a number of years as a carman, then self-employed as a barber for 45 years.

The preceding paragraph was written by Jim several years ago. He was not one to toot his own horn, so it will be tooted for him. Jim was an athlete. He participated in football, track and field, as a hockey team manager, and baseball, earning 12 varsity letter awards. In at least one season he led the area in strikeouts (as a pitcher, not a batter).

Jim played cornet in the high school band and orchestra, and continued with the German Band (later the Entertainers) and the Two Harbors City Band until 1972. He then played with the Shrine Band for many years. He was a diligent student of music and practiced for an hour nearly every day during "band season".

At 50 he began running and skiing, beginning by walking up and down his driveway one time, doing one pushup and one sit-up. A few years and many lost pounds later, he was competing in a 5K race nearly every summer weekend. He ran Grandma's Marathon six times, the last at age 60. Winter was for skiing, and he raced throughout the season.

Jim had been active in his church serving as a deacon and head usher. He participated in the Stephen Ministry as a lay person providing spiritual support to those in need. Jim was a 32nd degree Mason and he also served on the Board of Directors of the Two Harbors Federal Credit Union.

In later life he enjoyed walking, a little traveling, and keeping the flowers and grass at home looking nice. He had a great smile and a twinkle in his eye right up to the end.

Jim is survived by his wife - Jan Marker Alm of Two Harbors; children - Brad (Debbie) Alm of Two Harbors, Brian (Carolyn) Alm of Spokane, Washington, Susan Bethea of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, J. Jeffery Bucklew of North Carolina, Lisa Bucklew of Two Harbors, and Christoph Leupold, his AFS "son" of Zurich, Switzerland; brother - Steve (Diane) Alm of Two Harbors; grandchildren - Monica, Amanda, Noah, Micah, Jonah, Michael, Jacob, and Jerrika; great-grandchildren - Autumn, Johnathon, Gene, Adora, and Maddox; and several nieces and nephews.

Thank you to the physicians and staff at St. Luke's Hospital for their care and thoughtfulness, and to the entire Lake View Hospital, Clinic, and Pharmacy staff for their years of care, kindness, and support.

As Jim requested, no services will be held. Gifts in his memory may be sent to Friends of the Bandshell Park, Two Harbors, MN; Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Two Harbors, MN; or the Two Harbors Public Library.
