Football: Agates shut out Pine City
For the second straight week, Two Harbors forced seven turnovers — three interceptions and four fumble recoveries — on their way to a 21-0 win over Pine City on Friday, Sept. 14, in Two Harbors.
Senior Andrew Hulst got the turnover party started when he batted, caught and returned a Nick Hansmann pass 21 yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter.
The first quarter was especially bad for the dragons offense, after Karsen Holm picked off another pass and recovered a fumble for Two Harbors.
Every time Pine City started to put together a drive into Agate territory, a fumble or interception ended the drive and kept the Dragons scoreless.
"We dodged some bullets defensively," coach Tom Nelson said. "They had some opportunities and they carved us up at times, yardage-wise, pretty good."
Joey Marker scored on short runs in the second and third quarter and for the first time this season, the Agate running game started to return to form, rushing for more than 300 yards for the first time in 2018.
Unfortunately for the Agates, injuries are becoming a concern. Two Harbors has already lost senior running back Ricky Brenna for the season with a leg injury and Mason Meyer, an all-conference defensive player last season, has left the last two games with an ankle injury.
"We're having some challenges thrown out us here," Nelson said. "The last four years, we've been incredibly healthy. Right now, we probably have more injuries at this moment than we have in the last four years combined. We're in a rash of injuries right now, but that gives opportunities for other guys to step up and get a spot or get additional playing time."
Two Harbors (3-1) will play Virginia at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in Two Harbors.
