DNR Report: Feb. 2

Conservation Officer David Schottenbauer (Silver Bay) worked area angling activity. Time was also spent working area snowmobile trails.

CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) spent a large amount of time on a trapping investigation culminating in a search warrant. Time was also spent working the Ely-Babbitt-Tower Fun Run, with good participation and lots of family groups out riding. Speed was a problem, with numerous speed readings more than 20 mph over the posted limit, with citations being issued. Other enforcement action included expired registration, fail to transfer ownership and unattended lines.

CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) did snowmobile patrols during the week. He checked anglers on designated and non-designated trout lakes. Required online training was completed.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) spent the week checking anglers with Officer Osborne during a work detail. Complaints of an underage drinking party was handled and a trespass complaint was investigated. An arrest was made for felony drug possession. Enforcement action was taken for possession of drugs, paraphernalia and multiple angling violations.

CO Sean Williams (Ely 1) reports he and area officers attended the annual Ely Snowmobile Fun Run. Temperatures were good; however, snow, wind and lake slush made for some tough conditions for most of the day. Violations included snowmobile speed.

CO Marty Stage (Ely) traveled into the BWCAW and found every party contacted that day to be in violation of some sort of fishing or litter law. But on another day, while checking a lone fish house on an Ely lake, the officer found two 15-year-old boys fishing. When the officer remarked that it was unusual and refreshing to see them doing so, one young man volunteered that he had just sold his Xbox to pay for the new fish locator they were using.
